Typing slowly may improve your writing skills. Researchers found that essay writers who had to use one hand to type used a larger, more sophisticated vocabulary compared with two-handed typers. The theory is that slowing down gives you a chance to think about the words you want to use and express yourself more eloquently. A mini case history on special sales: I wrote a job-search book and tried to sell it to college students. It was too much for them to read, and $14.95 was too much to spend. I converted each chapter (prospecting, resumes, cover letters, interviewing, etc) into a 32-page booklet and sold them to colleges. They paid me $.50 each if they bought 10,000 or more, and then gave them to the students. My unit cost was about $.10 when printing 100,000 at a time. I only made $ .40 on each booklet, but a sale to one college was worth about $4000 to me. Many colleges bought them.

Asking for a blurb? Ask nicely in a well-composed, personal email. Don't send your request by Facebook or Twitter. email is best, when possible. Here are the important points to include in your letter when asking for a book quote:

• Quickly introduce yourself in a personal way, then state that you're asking for a book jacket quote.

• Briefly offer the details about your book: genre, story, publisher, release date.

• Explain why you think the contributor is a kindred spirit who might like your book. Possible reasons could be: you also like his/her writing; one of the author's titles compares well with yours; or you both love and write about the same topics.

• Give the contributor a deadline for the potential endorsement, but offer as big a timeline as possible.

• Let the contributor know where the blurb will be used. Will it be on your book cover, your author website, or both?

•Don't forget to say thank you!

See the big picture. In 1866 an Iowa farmer watched the construction of the transcontinental railroad near his fields. After seeing the track laid and a locomotive steam through, he thought, "So that is what railroading is about: tracks and trains." What didn't he see? Among many other things, that he could get his products to more markets more quickly, and that once there they would have to compete against products from many more places. He saw the obvious steel and wheels (compare to bookstores) but he didn't see the hidden opportunities (non-traditional sales). Instead of selling what your books are, see the larger perspective of what your books do. How can corporations, associations, schools or the military use your information for their benefit?
