Book-Marketing Tip of the Week – April 27, 2015

Why is a concise promotion called a blurb? The word blurb, meaning an inspired recommendation, comes from an evening in 1907 during an annual trade dinner of New York publishers where it was customary to distribute copies of new books with special promotional jackets. For his book, humorist Gelett Burgess caused a sensation with a cover drawing of a very attractive and buxom young woman he named 'Miss Belinda Blurb." From then on, any flamboyant endorsement would be known as a "blurb." ("The Little Book of Answers," by Doug Lennox)

Book-Marketing Tip of the Week – April 20, 2015

Hear the knock of opportunity. A leading school did a study that showed that its graduates performed well at first, but in ten years they were overtaken by a more streetwise, pragmatic group. The reason, according to the professor who ran the study was, "We taught them how to solve problems, not recognize opportunities." Where do you hear opportunity knocking? How can you answer it?

In an experiment that provided participants with an opportunity to buy a discounted coffee mug, those who were told they had been randomly selected to get the discount were 3 times more likely to want to buy than people who believed everyone got the discount. Researchers Jerry M. Burger and David F. Caldwell of Santa Clara U. say such "special" opportunities may be because people's self-esteem is tied to factors that distinguish them from the crowd.

Book-Marketing Tip of the Week – April 6, 2015

Stop thinking in terms of frontlist and backlist. Most non-bookstore buyers are less concerned with the publication date than they are with how the content of your book can help them or their customers, employees, students or members. Assuming your information is relevant, corporations may use it as a premium to increase sales of their products, magazines as a way to increase subscriptions or by museum gift shops as a way to enhance the experiences of their guests. In each case, the format of your information may have to be changed to accommodate the buyers' needs.
