"I've learned that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it." Andy Rooney
"I've learned that the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am." Andy Rooney
There will be no APSS open mic today or Friday. I'll be back on the line next Tuesday (Dec 1 at 3:30 – 4:30 pm ET) and Friday (Dec 4, Noon – 1:00 ET) to answer your questions about Book Selling University, non-bookstore marketing, and book marketing in general.
It's not what you publish that generates revenue, it's what people buy.
"Today, design is not proprietary. What is proprietary is your brand. You need a clear point of view that is consistent and delivers on expectations." Kenneth Cole in Fortune
"People are exposed to outdoor advertising for only a few seconds, so a good billboard should only have seven words and two things to look at," says Glen Lane. Your book's cover acts as a billboard, so those same comments apply to it, too
Research shows that individuals generate more relevant and inspired ideas when working on their own. Encourage that before having people congregate in a brainstorming session

How can you hook people to learn more about your book? An example is what TV people say: "How many feet of snow will we have tomorrow? Find out after this break." People stick around because it's important to them to know.
"More than 135 million unique books have been published. A study finds that reading for just six minutes each day can help reduce stress by up to 68%." The Costco Connection (Nov 2020, p 35)
A poll among Costco members showed that 44% read ebooks, 35% read hard copies and 21% listen to audiobooks. The Costco Connection (Nov 2020, p 35)
"The top three most-read books are the Bible, Quotations from Chairman Mao Tsu-Tung and Harry Potter (the series). More than 135 million unique books have been published. A study finds that reading for just six minutes each day can help reduce stress by up to 68%." The Costco Connection (Nov 2020, p 35)
"I wrote copy explaining the history, aura and sensibility of the things we sold. It gave the business a point of view, and the merchandise became both a revenue producer and a brand enhancer." Stephen Gordon, Founder of Restoration Hardware
Be optimistic when you ask for the order. "You don't want any books today, do you?" is not a good closing question.

4 things for sustainable advantage: 1) Publish high-quality, unique content, 2) have a distinctive brand position, 3) promote the benefits of your content to a target segment(s), and 4) have it available where your buyers are
"While it's tempting to try to be everything to everyone, an impactful way to stand out in a crowded marketplace is to do one thing well." Entrepreneur magazine
Three things every fire needs are ignition, fuel and oxygen. The same apply to authors. Set a goal to ignite your desire to sell more books. Fuel that desire with creativity and passion. When things don't go your way, take a deep breath and try again.
Two kinds of people fail – those who listen to everybody or listen to nobody
Should you write about what you know and love, or write about what will sell? The answer is, "Yes." Your passion for your topic can be your ticket to greater well-being as much as it should be a key to exceptional market performance.
Confucius said, "If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years plant trees." What seeds can you plant today that will impact your sales in ten years? Perhaps training for writing, selling or speaking? Joining APSS (www.bookapss.org)?
To be more creative, gesture with both hands while brainstorming. When Singapore researchers asked subjects to come up with unique uses for a building complex, those who talked out solutions with both hands had more creative ideas than those who brainstormed with just one hand.
